WINDOWS: A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPERIMENT in 14 pictures (aug 2016)

Reading photographic articles it is often stated to find yourself your own “signature” or style. I have reservations to this statement. Agreed it’s not satisfactory to copy the style of other photographers, although doing so is a means to learn. I am afraid that sticking to a signature or style gets limiting and boring in the end, to become a never ending “manierism”. That’s why doing something else, an experiment, may lead to new inspiration. I decided for a series of windows, already pictured everywhere, making this subject not very interesting. So there’s the challence.

Reflecting the pictures I learned that windows can be seen as form and function. Mostly seen on pictures is the form factor. Often in square, as one window or in repeating patterns. Sometimes beautiful, I am not that attracted to the form factor. Possibly focussing into details could lead to interesting abstraction, a new goal to investigate.

The function aspect made me aware of more opportunities. The first function of windows is protection without obstructing light and view. But there are more ways in which humans use windows. To hide yourself, to show your belongings, a place to contemplate, watch. It’s all about human behaviour, an interesting territory to explore.
